Founded in September 2023 by Tom Chapman and Dr. Rob Angell, our goal is to provide you with engaging content that combines the latest news, cutting-edge theories, and practical insights in the field of marketing. At 1541, we believe that marketing performance can be enhanced through meticulous planning, forensic attention to detail, and a nicely brewed cup of tea. Virtues synonymous with the number 1541, as it was one of our founder's colar number when he served as a Police Officer.
On 1541, we compile and write about contemporary practical issues in marketing that make the discipline exciting. We combine real-world experiences with a dash of theory, some opinion and hopefully clarity to good effect.

Dr Rob Angell
Dr Rob Angell our esteemed partner, is an accomplished professional with extensive experience in market research and academia. He started his career in fine dining before transitioning into market research for a large government organisation. Later on, he ventured into entrepreneurship by establishing his own research agency where he worked with clients ranging from small start-ups to multinational companies.
In addition to his business endeavours, Dr Angell has made significant contributions in academia at the University of Southampton where he currently serves as Director of the Southampton MBA program. He has received numerous teaching awards and has published his ideas in top international journals such as Harvard Business Review and Journal of Retailing.
His expertise in consumer behaviour, quantitative analysis, and structural equation modelling humanises a data-driven approach to our discussions. Dr Rob Angell brings valuable insights into analytics-driven marketing strategies and a good glass of red.
Tom Chapman
Tom Chapman is an expert in digital marketing and media with a passion for leveraging technology advancements within these fields. With nearly 20 years' experience in Higher Education including 10 at the University of Southampton where he currently holds the position of Principal Teaching Fellow,
Tom has played key roles such as Associate Dean, Deputy Head of School (Education) and Director of Postgraduate Programmes. He has also served as the Interim Head of the Department of Digital and Data Driven Marketing.
Tom's expertise extends to areas such as internet and services marketing, digital media (both technical and strategic), CRM, and digital marketing. His current interest focus is on student learning, word-of-mouth referral choices linked with social media, higher education web presence effectiveness, authentic assessment and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education.
With a strong background in academia combined with practical industry experience, Tom Chapman brings a unique perspective to our blog as well as currently sitting as an Advisory Board Member of the Cyber Resilience Centre for the South East (A police-led partnership with academia and businesses aimed at improving cyber resilience in businesses in the South East of England).
