Independent marketing intelligence.
1541 is an independent bridge between academic insight and marketing practice. We exist to translate serious marketing thinking into real‑world decisions for marketers, educators and students.
Founded in September 2023 by Tom Chapman and Dr Rob Angell, 1541 combines evidence‑based thinking, lived experience and a certain forensic calm – the same qualities one of our founders once needed as officer 1541.
The result: serious ideas, explained plainly – without hype, vendor bias or funnels.
No advertising
No affiliate income
No sponsored content
No vendor bias
1541 is built on a gift model: content first, trust before monetisation, and no funnels. If there are tickets or courses one day, the thinking stays open.
Who is behind 1541?
1541 is co-founded by a professor of marketing analytics and a digital media specialist, with Karen Clinkard leading our Educators Corner as Editor. Between them, they bring decades of research, teaching and advisory work into one place.
Dr Rob Angell
Rob is a professor of marketing with a background that runs from fine dining to government research, entrepreneurial agencies and leading business schools.
He has held roles at Plymouth, Cardiff, Southampton and Stirling, directed MBA programmes, and published work in outlets such as Harvard Business Review and the Journal of Retailing.
His focus on consumer behaviour, quantitative analysis and structural equation modelling keeps 1541's arguments analytically sharp — and usually accompanied by a decent glass of red.
Tom Chapman
Tom is a digital marketing and media specialist with nearly twenty years in higher education, including senior roles at the University of Southampton.
He has served as Associate Dean, Director of Postgraduate Programmes and Interim Head of Digital and Data-Driven Marketing, while advising organisations such as the Cyber Resilience Centre for the South East.
His interests span digital media, CRM, student learning and the use of AI in education, helping 1541 stay grounded in how ideas work in real institutions and real channels.
Karen Clinkard
Karen is a Principal Teaching Fellow at the University of Southampton and a Senior Fellow of Advance HE, with over 20 years in higher education across Southampton and Portsmouth.
A Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, her teaching spans digital marketing, entrepreneurship, design thinking, services and B2B — always with a focus on live-client, employability-driven learning.
Her research centres on employability and enterprise. As Editor of Educators Corner, Karen brings classroom-tested rigour and a passion for making marketing education genuinely useful.
